Volkswagen was proud to announce recently that the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, an impossibly fast “Super Sports Car” achieved a new landspeed world record for production cars. With officials from the German Technical Inspection Agency and a representative from Guinness Book of World Records, the Super Sport achieved an average top speed of 267.81 miles on the Ehra-Lessien closed track just outside VW’s headquarters in Wolfsburg.
“We took it that we would reach an average value of 425 km/h (264 mph),” explains Bugatti’s chief engineer Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, “but the conditions today were perfect and allowed even more.”
The Super Sport is a revised model of the exclusive 1,001 HP Bugatti Veyron 16.4, which launched in 2005. With specifications like a twin-clutch, seven-speed gearbox, this car blends precise driving performance and excellent stability with unheard-of street speeds.
Though few of us will own a Bugatti in our lifetimes, it is good to see Volkswagen’s engineers and technicians explore the full gauntlet of personal transportation. Though the VW brand will likely never host such a car under their mass production
